Trump's latest policy paper marks departure on gun control

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who once advocated certain gun control measures, says he is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment and that gun rights should not be infringed upon.

In his second policy announcement of his campaign, Trump argues against expanded background checks and says the government should not place any kind of limits on the types of firearms people can own.

"Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice," he writes. "The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own."

The positions are at odds with the ones he expressed in his 2000 book, "The America We Deserve."

"I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun," he wrote then. "With today's Internet technology we should be able to tell within 72 hours if a potential gun owner has a record."

Trump has also shifted to the right in other policy areas, including abortion rights and health care.

"We need real solutions to address real problems. Not grandstanding or political agendas," he concludes.

Good to see he's willing to change his position?

Tell 'em what they want to hear, Get elected, then do what you want?

15 years ago? Really?

Have you tossed BO's stance on his more recent position on 'marriage' vs his stance in 2008? According to BO, he's 'evolved'.........but according to you and others, Trump isn't allowed the same consideration.

Oh, well..........typical

Contrary to popular belief

FULLY AUTOMATIC assault weapons have been banned since the 1990's when BC signed it into law. SEMI-AUTOMATIC weapons have never been banned.

You have to get people on both sides to use the correct terms to know what they are talking about........

I can't imagine liberals ever even voting to ban them because they are also very popular in their own home states. It isn't just the Tea Party opposing that 'ban'........

Get your facts straight............

I thought we were talking about The Donald changing his position on gun control....NOT on FULLY AUTOMATIC assault weapons have been banned since the 1990's when BC signed it into law. SEMI-AUTOMATIC weapons have never been banned. and also NOT on BC.

The Donald and changing positions on his part....Stay focused.

I AM staying focused

In order to know if he's actually changed his position, you would have to know if he's talking about 'automatic' or 'semi-automatic' assault weapons. He may not be aware that 'automatic' types are already banned. Stay focused on what the topic really is....

You, of all people, are such a stickler for correct usage of language so you should be aware of 'generalities' rather than 'specifics'. (such as the use of 'always' as a 'general' term because of a 'high majority' vs 'never' meaning 'so rare as to be non-existent)

UNLESS, when HE said, I support the ban on assault weapons he was talking about "ASSAULT WEAPONS"and he didn't care, it didn't matter if they were Automatic OR semi-Automatic.

HE just didn't like "ASSAULT WEAPONS".

The Donald carries a Bible AND the Merriam-Webster with him at all times.

Definition of ASSAULT WEAPON
: any of various automatic or semiautomatic firearms; especially : assault rifle

Tweet Trump to ask him what he meant..........done.

Congress, when they passed the ban, separated the definition to only ban ONE type.

Let's get in the wayback machine

It’s an undisputed fact that Safelink Wireless offered the first free government cell phone in Tennessee in 2008, but don’t let the year confuse you. Barack Obama was not elected President until November of that year, but that first free government cell phone was given out three months earlier during the Bush administration.

Different types of phones, JP
Sep 21, 2015 2:09AM PDT

Safelink was a program designed to help the elderly and disabled carry a communication device with them so they could call for help if they fell or other types of help. A fixed landline doesn't always work for those types of situations. It was shortly afterward that the 'around your neck' button systems were introduced as well for "I've fallen and I can't get up". BO just took the Safelink idea miles further down his road of freebies.

That sounds like something a cell phone would do.

It’s an undisputed fact that Safelink Wireless offered the first free government cell phone in Tennessee in 2008,

2008?...Before Obama?

BO just took the Safelink idea

The Safelink "idea" that was developed/started/supported by BUSH?

BUSH gave America the Obamaphone...Bush should be livid...and demand HIS name on that phone...Give credit where credit is due.

I guess you don't remember the black women on video hollering about how she was going to get her OBAMAPHONE.......she wasn't saying she was going to get a BUSHPHONE.

BO took the 'idea' to a whole new level...........so did you get yours?

That's because you didn't tell her that Bush started all the "free cellphone" Government freebees.
