I don't get it
Feb 9, 2006 2:58AM PST

If this product is for real. I'm all over it!

I don't get why people go off on Apple for innovating. They HAVE to keep coming out with the latest, greatest thing to stay ahead and yet people end up bitching about it.

Why is nobody moaning about iRiver? Because nobody buys their stuff.

Let's compare:

iRiver media players:

U10, T30, T10, 900, 800, 700, 100, H10 20GB, H10 6GB, H10 5GB and PMC120

Apple media players:

iPod 60GB, iPod 30GB, Nano 4GB, Nano 2GB, Nano 1GB, Shuffle 1GB, Shuffle 512MB.

That's ELEVEN (iRiver) to SEVEN (Apple). Check out Sony's site and you'll see a similar confusing mess of products. At least Apple's lineup is very easy to understand. iPod (big) Nano (little) Shuffle (tiny).

LOL

LOL, yeah. I do agree with you on that one. iRiver does have a large line of products. The only thing about the iRiver line versus the iPod line is the fact that most iRiver's have an FM Tuner and most of them sport voice recording.

Extras

There are definitely certain items that I wish iPods had - like the FM tuner that can be found on other players like the iRiver line. But then maybe we'd have to sacrfice that amazing form factor of the iPod and quite frankly, I find very little of interest on the airwaves these days.

I guess it is nice to have at the gym so you can listen to whatever TV you are watching if they have an FM broadcaster for that TV set. The real shame is in Apple's pricing of accessories. I REFUSE to pay 50 bucks for the d*mned add-on tuner.

AMEN!

I totally agree with that, it is INSANE to spend $50 for an FM Tuner...CRRRAZY!!!

The major thing that irritates me about Apple is the fact that whenever they FINALLY do something that the PC world has been doing for years, they call it an innovation. That kind of urks me.

BUT, if I could afford a Mac or iPod, I'd so totally be buying one, lol.

Innovation
Feb 9, 2006 4:07AM PST

The innovation Apple gets credit for is in its design and use. Within seconds you understand how to work an iPod and navigate through a huge library of tunes with just your thumb.

But what really made the iPod special was its integration with iTunes. Just plug it into your computer and away you go. You didn't have to be a hacker geek to figure out how to get audio files from your computer to you MP3 player. Several MP3 players were around LONG before the iPod. It just took Apple's philosophy of beautiful design and ease of use to blow that industry wide open.

FM?

I bought the IPod because I didn't WANT to listen to the radio.

It is

You can buy a really nice AM/FM/Weather/TV band radio for alot less than $50. I have one that I use when I really want to listen to the radio. So, keep the iPod, buy a radio if you want to listen to the radio. And take the money you saved and buy music, or whatever.

Still waiting on Line in to be standard
Feb 9, 2006 4:02AM PST

You would think that a company that is "All about the music" would include a cotten pickin' line in on the most popular mp3 player in the known universe.

Not allowed
Feb 9, 2006 4:13AM PST

Technically, Apple isn't allowed to be "all about the music." In fact, Apple keeps getting dragged back into court by Apple Corps (a Beatle's multimedia company) because the settlements from the lawsuit years ago stated that Apple Computer could keep their name if they stayed out of the music industry. Then along came iTunes and the iPod... uh oh Wink
