Troubleshooting

Sep 2, 2016 2:48PM PDT

Hi all. First time trying one of these forums to get some help. As I have been unemployed for a few months now, money is extremely tight, and I wasnt able to keep up with a good antivirus site and I believe my computer has something. Actually, I think I have 2 problems - but I believe one to be hardware - the font or battery - But as long as I stay connected to an outlet it seems to be OK - for now. Anyways, symptoms I have listed are below. Also, I am unfamiliar with process on how to make a log, but I follow instructions pretty well if someone could be patient to walk me through something.

Symptoms - It seems like the backspace button, when pressed a specific number of times, especially online or inside of dropdown boxes - or even when inside of a document, could cause a complete system shutdown - I use Avast and Avira antivirus and both of them show nothing. I have downloaded the Microsoft Malware removal tool, and it too, shows nothing. I have used the Avira to shutdown a lot of processes that were being started up when I started the computer, so maybe (probably), I could have shut down something that was not supposed to be? Or removed something that I wasnt supposed to remove? I also have used the CCleaner several times this week. I am probably like 90% of the people in the world on computers - I know enough about it to get myself into trouble..........lol.

Anyways, a few questions to go along with the post. First - Could the font or battery problem be related to the automatic shutdown problem?

Could I have accidentally shut down something important that shouldnt have been shut down?

Is this backspace MO a typical tell of a kind of bug or virus?

All help appreciated. Thanks beforehand.

Wow. Looks bad to me.
Sep 2, 2016 4:04PM PDT

That's one messed up dump. I'm surprised this works at all.

I don't know how your Windows got all that but maybe there's been a lot of techs slinging trash at your machine?

Believe it or not..things seem to be getting better already
Sep 2, 2016 4:19PM PDT

I am still following GRIFs suggestions, as well as figuring out if I will keep one of these AVs or if I will switch to Essentials........but things seem to be better.......the backspace problem is fixxed and startup is quick again.......as well as response time from when I click a key to when it actually completes the command.............so I am stoked guys......thanks..........to all so far............

Since Windows 7 and on has Defender
Sep 2, 2016 3:34PM PDT

And it scores pretty well, along with the other freebies at NINITE.COM (all caps intentional) I can't see what we ever have to go without.

I don't see what OS is involved so run the scans Grif lists, decide which AV you want (I use Defender and a few browser add ons and have not one issue in years.)

I don't use CCleaner but once every few months so I can't guess what's driving you to use it so often. For now, try to focus on the scans by Grif, uninstall your expired AV and learn about ninite.

CCleaner reasoning
Sep 2, 2016 3:43PM PDT

I have windows 10, I believe 64bit, but not sure. I run Avast and Avira AV programs, and I have CCleaner, and windows Malware removal tool. I used the CCleaner as many years ago when I was first learning about cleaning a computer someone told me about it and it fixxed my problems. Since then I figure since I know I dont visit the most trustworthy sites that this is a way to keep it CLEAN......so to speak........but again, maybe (probably) I am my own worst enemy here.

- Collapse -
That's a problem.
Sep 2, 2016 3:46PM PDT

You are running 2 AV programs so you are doing what others tell you not to do.

Frankly I can't guess why folk do that but they do end up at the service counter with the strangest problems.

2AV motive
Sep 2, 2016 3:57PM PDT

Since having serious issues with Google Chrome about 6 months ago, I uninstalled it and installed Avast which has their Avast Safezone Browser, which SEEMED to be doing a good job of keeping us protected.......at least I thought so........when the computer started to have issues, and I was reading about how to resolve, one of the forums I went to the people recomended the AVIRA package of programs..........and once installed, the AVIRA AV removed something, and their speedup software helped me to resolve the slowness of my startup .........and my startups are still remarkably fast............my problems are with the font and now this issue with the backspacing......but maybe it has been fixxed.....I am still checking......wish me luck

get rid of one of your antiviruses
Sep 2, 2016 3:51PM PDT

you can have real issues by having two antiviruses installed. it could cause slowness and other problems. decide which one you want and uninstall the other. personally I would get rid of both of them and just use windows defender (or microsoft security essentials) depending on the os that is installed.

Thanks to all
Sep 2, 2016 4:53PM PDT

All....thanks.......everything appears to have been fixxed.........I did what Grif suggested and both Adware and Spybot removed lots of ***.........as well as uninstalled one of the AV programs...........completed the safeboots............and now my little laptop seems to have come back to life...quicker....more responsive............and so far no problems with the backspace anymore.....I will keep all posted.........and will definitely recommend this forum space..........

AND..........a friend of mine has a computer with windows 7 giving him some problems......tomorrow I will go and give him a hand as well as with these new tools i feel empowered..................lol

Troubleshooting

If you have not already done so do create recovery media.
Just in case things go from bad to worse.

As has been said only one active AV at a time so pick one and toss the others.
If you toss avast and/or avira it would be a good idea to also use their uninstall util just to clean up things.
