Question

Trouble W/ HDMI to Receiver VS TV

May 22, 2013 12:51PM PDT

Short Description: When I plug my HDMI cord into my Onkyo receiver, I get a picture that goes in and out (not at any consistent rate). Sound comes through fine. When I go straight through to an input on my TV, I get perfect picture, absolutely no audio. BTW, my TV is a 55" TV supporting 1080P.

Details: My source is my PC. I am using a converter to take my DVI (from my video card) and audio (from my sound card of course) and it converts it to HDMI. I know the audio is coming through because (read above) and I know the picture will play on the tv (again, above). My video card is a nVideo GeForce GTX280

I have messed around considerably with refresh rates, resolutions, etc... on my PC to find a good combo but nothing gets rid of the flickering when running through the receiver, or helps with the audio when going through the TV.

I did try it on an older TV (still HD, but only 720P) and it worked perfectly when I lowered the resolution. While I get that my video card may not support my larger TV, I don't get why one input accepts video perfectly, no sound, while my receiver gives sound, with bad video.

Apologies if this is a bit long, just wanted to provide what little details I have.

Thank you to anyone who reads this and especially anyone that can help!!

Just to reiterate

Have you also tried the following connections?

PC (DVI out) --> (DVI in) DVI-HDMI converter (HDMI out) --> Sony HDTV

PC (R/L analog out) --> (R/L analog/composite in) Onkyo receiver

[Splitting the video/audio shouldn't be an issue- I've done this before.]

Are you certain your PC doesn't actually have some sort of digital audio output(?) For example, my (now defunct) old budget Compaq (circa 2006-2007) had a headphone jack that doubled as a digital audio output.

I'd also suggest trying a higher end converter since from time to time Monoprice puts out a few lemons. Also, swap out both the DVI & HDMI cables just to be 100% certain it's neither of those. Try different HDMI ports as well.
