General discussion

trouble viewing racing video

May 20, 2005 9:30AM PDT

hi all,
My dad has win98 and media player 7.1
He is going to a site called www.4njbets.com
He is having trouble viewing the video of the races.
i have win98se and media player 9 and i am having no trouble seeing the video.
My question is can you put WMP 9 on a win 98 machine?
I think he is having trouble because the site seems like it wants player 9.
Thank you,
Laura

I looked there already and it does not list 98 just 98se and so on. I guess i will have to try and put 98se on that machine but it is an emachine an old one and i am not sure how i would get all the drivers i need as it came with a restore disk.
Thanks,
Laura

Re: upgrading

Run setup from your Windows 98 SE CD. With a little bit of luck it will keep all the drivers installed, if it runs in 'upgrade' mode. But it might also refuse to run because it's a 'full' install CD.
Then try to find an 'upgrade' CD on eBay.
Or rename win.com (to win.old, for example) and rerun setup. It will run now and with a little bit of luck keep the old drivers.

Good luck,

Kees

Whoa, hold on there...

1. find out your video ram. Only 1mb and that is the real problem. 2mb should work. Adding a 4mb PCI card will really work. No video player can overcome hardware limits. Aida32 is a free utility that can tell you "display" info. Start-run-dxdiag will run the Dx diagnostic and the display tab may tell you.
2. Depending on your load and use, 32mb of Simm ram (72 pin) may not be enough unless you turn off stuff running...not needed.
3. Overall, I agree with the upgrade to SE as a lot of stuff requires this as a minimum.
4. What size is the hard drive? You may have room for another upgrade method, saving drivers...I see you're not too concerned with saving installed programs as most people are.
