Trouble using webcam at college

I've been trying to make a long distance relationship work, and so webcamming would help make things easier, but something about her internet connection at college isn't really letting us. Yahoo's webcam doesn't seem to want to connect at all, msn's will but we're talking 1 frame every 10 seconds, I WAS able to see her in real time motion on netmeeting, but she wasn't able to see me at all, and that doesn't even want to work anymore. There must be a way to get around the system and be able to cam with each other at a somewhat decent speed.

College networks are well known to be filled to capacity. I won't write with what but feel lucky if SKYPE works much less your video cam.
