You can check signal levels quickly by holding down the Info button for up to 10 seconds when tuned to a digital channel. This should bring up a display with signal strength and error rate indicators. What does it show?

Make sure the unit is set to "Home Use" in plug and play.
Select UK as Country setting.
Select "Air" (not "Cable")
Select "Digital & Analogue" or just "Digital"

Many thanks for your advice, although not got as many as b4, the TV very mysteriously tuned itself into the channels already listed but not visable! Bizarre, this happened over 24 hrs after first tuning with Plug & Play. I know old kit used to take some time to warm up...........but this was just weird...........by the way, no-one had touched it.....mmm........again thanks.
