Trouble staying logged on when I start my computer up.

I have a Toshiba laptop running with Windows XP. When I click to log on, the desktop comes up, but it immediately logs me back off. It doesn't give time enough for any of my icons or the start button to appear so as I can click on anything. Hope someone can help!
Thanks in advance!

How do I get in safe mode? Reply to Bob

Sorry for asking, but I haven't used this computer for at least a year. I have a Mac now and have completely forgotten how to boot up in safe mode. Will you please tell me how to boot up in safe mode?
Thanks so much!
