Trouble reinstalling MSN on a new PC

Dec 20, 2007 7:23AM PST

My old HP Pavilion 6736 PC died recently, and I bought another old computer to replace it, a "Compaq Deskpro EN".

Under system properties it says;
System
Microsoft Windows 2000
5.00.2195
Service Pack 4
Computer
x86 family 6 model 8 stepping 3
AT/AT COMPATIBLE
261,552 KB RAM

Upon receiving the PC, I installed the video card, modem and ram from the dead Pavilion, and used this computer to download WinRAR, WinZip, Ad-Aware, and SpywareBlaster.
The PC came with Spybot S&D, and ClamWin antivirus, among a few other programs.

After all of this was finished, I tried installing MSN 8, and am having a bit of trouble using it.
It installs fine, but I am unable to sign up.

When I click "I've already signed up", I was greeted with the following error message;
"We're sorry, we cannot sign you up for MSN because there is a problem with your computer or the MSN service. Please try again later."
I tried to use a version 9 upgrade CD I had, and it also gives me an error.

At first I thought it was a problem with the modem, and tried two others I had.
Same error with all three.
I found an old trial CD for a different ISP, and installed that to see if it'd work.

It did. I connected with no errors at all.
I was even able to use MSN's guest sign-in feature to access my account.
However, I still couldn't use the sign-up wizard.
It still gave the same error, even though I was online.

I've tried calling MSN Customer Support, but was put on hold and forgot about.

At this point I don't know what to do.
I've tried everything I could think of to get MSN to work, and everything has failed.
Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

What?

I already posted the error MSN is giving me.
If you could tell me exactly what other details I need to post, that'd be great.

If I take what I see above the only item that can hurt is...

Windows 2000. MS and MSN are not doing great with the pre-XP OSes.

Then again it could be the usual driver issues or another dead or half dead modem. The full details were never revealed so that leaves the possibility that some IRQ, INT or such is not right and could result in your issue.

Try another dialup system such as aol for now to dismiss the possible hardware issue.

Hmm, I suspected that Win2000 might be the problem, but MSN's system requirements state that it works on 2000.
It also says it needs service pack 2, but this machine has service pack 4 installed.
That might be a possible explanation..

As for the modem,
It is not the problem, apparently.
As I have already said, I tried three different modems, all of which were working fine in the computers they came out of, and made certain they had the correct drivers for Win2000.

As for trying another ISP,
Did you read my entire post? I already stated that I tried this, and was able to connect to the internet successfully with that particular ISP.

And I've already given as many details as I could think of.
I ask again, what other details do you need?

MSN is ... MSN.

If they are having issues there is nothing I can do about that.

As to SP2, SP4 is preferres.

Yes I read your note but you are not reading our note. It's in red letters each time you post. While it may not make a difference it does reduce some possible areas I would explore.

Remember this is not a tech support site but a person to person discussion area that you can chat about issues. There is no paid persons here so you have to pitch in to get the best results.

Sorry for the typo.

SP4 is the preferred and latest service pack for Windows 2000.

"Note: If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended."

I did post the operating system.
I did post the computer model.
I did post the other specifics I could think of.

I don't know what else you want me to post.
Actually, forget about it. It seems this forum is not exactly the best place to ask for help.

I've already been given false info in my first topic here, and now you're telling me to do things I've already done, and stated to have done, such as trying another ISP..

I'll seek answers elsewhere. Goodbye.

There are dozens of "Compaq Deskpro EN"

It's not exact enough. I'm sorry if you feel that getting the details straight is too much to ask.
