Trouble opening Word Documents

Sep 25, 2004 1:57AM PDT

Hi,

A while ago I saved a Word document of my Resume to floppy disk, and then yesterday, spent the day emailing this document to various people.

However, when I sent a CC to myself the computer would not let me open it. I am given the following message:

"This file could not be found
Try one of the following
Check spelling and name of doc
try dif file name"

??Huh?? As this document is my Resume, I really need it to arrive in a viewable state. I sent an attachment to my family to test and they were able to view it but I still can't.

This leads me to think that maybe some setting is incorrect on my laptop. Or could it be that I am using Yahoo mail?

I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me solve this problem.

Many thanks for your time.

Annabel. Happy

I forgot to mention that I am running Windows XP Pro and have Office 2003.

Thanks.

Annabel,

This is strange indeed.

First a different question: why do you save it to and presumably send it from a diskette? What's wrong with your hard drive for document storage? It's faster and more reliable for everyday use. The primary use of diskettte is short term backup and transport.

Then:
- What is your email-program? Is it Outlook Express coupled to yahoo mail, or a Internet Explorer based webmail?
- Can you open/read attachments that other people send to you? Ask your family to send you a mail with some files attached (say: a text file, a word document and some picture) and see if you can open them? And let them forward your mail to you, so you can see if there's any difference with the cc.
- Can you open the file from Sent Items (that Outlook Express language, but Yahoo mail might not have it).
- Do you have another email-address somewhere (school, work for example) to open it there? Or can you open your yahoo mail at some other computer?
- A alternative for the previous question: did you try to open and use a free hotmail account? My children have one (like all children here) and I never hear any problem about attachments.
- How do you try to open the attachment? If it's by clicking on a link or an icon you would expect it to work. Can you see somehow what's 'behind' the link or icon?

With more information more help can be given, I hope.

Anyway, good luck with finding a job. What does your Resume say about your Computer Proficiency?

Kees

Hi,

I also have this problem. Perhaps I can provide a few more details so that someone could provide some guidance in how to solve the problem.

I have two computers networked through a Linksys router to the Comcast cable network. My older machine has windows 98SE and the newer machine has XP. Both have Norton antivirus on them. I regularly run Spybot and remove any problems that it finds.

Both computers use the Comcast Message Center - Microsoft Internet Explorer for managing the mail.

The Internet Security is set to medium on both computers, however XP has many more options to select from compared to Windows 98SE. It is difficult to know if the settings are the same.

The failure to open the word document occurs on the Windows XP computer. The failure dialog box shows up after the MS Word program has launched. After pressing "OK" the MS Word program is running with no file opened.

The failure also occurs with PDF files.

The computer with Windows 98SE does not have the problem.

The XP computer gets regular Norton and Windows updates. When we first got the XP computer we were able to open DOC and PDF files simply by double clicking on the e-mail attachment within the e-mail program.

Could one of the updates have changed a security setting?

Could I have or have had a virus or other attack on my system that has broken a link used to open a file located at Comcast's e-mail site?
