Trouble opening Windows Help and System Info Files

Mar 15, 2004 3:27AM PST

Recently while using the EasyCleaner application, I seem to have inadvertently deleted a file connected with Help and System Information. Now, am unable to open either of the files.

Is there a way of working around to rectify the problem, or is it necessary to re-install Windows XP again?

Grateful for any help.

Thank you.

Try System Restore to before the error.

Thank you.

Tried system restore for all the dates (eight or nine in March and February), as shown in block letters in the Sys Restore Appln. However, for all dates, I was getting the message, "Your computer can't be restored to the date suggested. No files were altered," or something to that effect. Then I came to know that the 'System Information' file in 'Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools' was not opening either.

I'm exploring the possibility of avoiding the reformatting and re-loading of Windows XP.

I think the main problem seems to be that whenever I find time on my hands, particularly in between the projects (I'm a freelance writer, copy editor/proofreader, re-writer, etc.), I take steps to keep my computer clean. This consists of cleaning the registry, removing unnecessary files, installing trial-ware programs and uninstalling them later, and so on. Perhaps, have to find some other work, so that the mind is diverted to other avogations. Any ideas?

Looking for help.

What I would do...
Mar 16, 2004 7:43AM PST

I'd have my XP CD handy and run...

SFC /SCANNOW

(Note the space after SFC)

Bob,

I thought you advised scanning. But it wasn't scanning at all. What was it?

Windows File Protection message came on "Please wait while Windows verifies that all protected Windows files are intact and in their original versions."

This took about 15 to 20 minutes, and then the message disappeared. What does it mean? My files are protected and in original version?

Can you elucidate for me?

Thanking you.

Thanks Larry and to you also, Profitt.

What I did was to go to Microsoft where I was directed to Kellys site -> http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm where the advice was, I quote,

"To reinstall Help and Support: Go to C:\Windows\inf\pchealth.inf. Right click and choose install. Have your CD handy."

In the event, there was no need for the CD and now Help and System Info files are opening.

To Profitt, I wish to add, I do weekly scanning through Windows Explorer > C:\ (have only single directory on HD) > File Menu > Properties > Tools > Scanning. However, I read somewhere that scanning through Command Prompt, like you suggested, is more thorough. Is it so? Do you advice me to carry such scanning instead? Lastly, how long does it take for a 40 GB HDD?

Thank you.
