trouble opening programmes

when trying to open some programmes on my mac osx 10.3 machine... once i click the icon, it appears in the dock as if it were about to begin running, but then it dissappears from the dock right away as if the programme has quit.

it's really annoying because i need a recording programme to work in the next week so that i can use it for my music coursework.

anybody got any answers they can give me as to what is going wrong?

What programs?

are you trying to open?
Check the console to see if there is anything in the logs that would indicate why these programs are quitting.

Have you used this program before without problems ? Is this a program you just loaded ? is it sitting in your Applications folder or is it sitting on your desktop ? Could you be trying to open it from the disk image folder ?

programmes are...

these are programs which i have just 'unstuffed'. one was a photoshop download and one was an audio recording application called 'sound studio'.
both of these applications are in the applications folder and all of my other application run fine.
i have downloaded other programmes that have actually worked the way they should but it's just the odd few that i'm having this problem with.

i'm quite an inexperienced mac user, where is the console to look at the logs?

your help is much appreciated.

Console is located

in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder.
Open it and you will see a log of what the machine has done. Now launch the offending program. see if the log records any new items.
Where did you get these programs from?

Did I hear Limewire?

Launch failed with error code -2857

ok so i opened the console and tried opening 'traktor dj studio' which is a trial that i downloaded from a website, it isn't a dodgy illeagal programme off limewire. the console said ''Launch failed with error code -2857''. i don't have a clue what that means...

ANYBODY GOT ANY ANSWERS??

What are the specs on your machine.
RAM, HD free space, processor speed/

-2857 is a mystery too
