Trouble Installing XP

Mar 15, 2004 9:05PM PST

We began by have a lot of lockups and had decided to reinstall wins XP. Formatted HD and tried to install. Wins stopped loading and said that files where not being copied correctly that maybe the disk was damaged. We redid using a new copy of XP, same thing. We put in new HD, same message. We changed out the CD and tried, same thing. We changed cable to HD and CD, same thing. We have changed out mem. and checked seating on Vid card. Nothing seems to help. We now have tried 3 HD's,
3 different copies of XP and still get the error message any Ideals. Thanks

"Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution."

XP glides onto good hardware. It appears you haven't found what's not working proper yet. Some fight it, but a monster power supply and good cooling is important.

Without a gritty detailed list of the machine, one can't see if this is the usual Athlon on 300Watt power supply or something else is amiss.

Sound to me like the error is coming from the plastic disc, not the hard drive -- but I'm not there to observe the procedures used. Yes, I see all the separate devices and that you've tried separate disc, but when I see you stated, "Formatted HD and tried to install", I don't know just what that means since you should be able to take a "new" hard drive then simply boot with the XPCD to start things off.

Perhaps you could elaborate on the preparation procedures used and to give details about the hardware.

Please note that just above the text editor (where you enter a question on the forum) is the following paragraph, and if certain information is not present in your question, our reply may not be very helpful:

Here's a pictorial of a XP install that shows no use of FDISK or FORMAT.

As I stated in the above. HD FORMATTED. and yes the fdisk was run and active partition set.

How do I convey that you led off on the wrong foot?

As you see, the disk was prepared in a way that leads to such troubles.

If I show you pictures, tell you not to do that and more, what more can the forum do?

I suggest that you delete the partitions that you have created (using the format tool you used to creat them) and then let Windows XP start from scratch, as Bob instructed.

then simply boot with the XPCD to start things off

If you didn't do that, just what was the startup procedures for your attempted install?

Reading the link Bob gave you, it seems to tell everything which can and should be done. What have you done.
