Trouble installing USB-2

I have a 6 year old Dell P-III with USB-1 ports. I tried to upgrade it to be able to run with a USB-2. I installed a USB-2 PCI card, but the computer would freeze at boot-up. It would'nt go past the Dell logo at boot up. I took out the PCI card -- all was OK. I reinstalled the PCI card in a different slot- same freeze up again. Finally I gave up and am back to the original configuration.
Question: Is there a conflict between the USB-1 and the USB-2? While I was installing the PCI card I disconnected all peripherals from the USB-1 port. Since the USB-1 ports are a part of the mother board I cannot remove it to test my suspicion that there may be a conflict between the two USBs. Dell tech rep was of no help, He said that he could not see any reason where the USB-2 cannot be installed but could not explain the freeze up.
Appreciate any explanation
My Computer details:
Dell desktop 4100
P-III 800 MHz, with 256Mb RAM
OS : Windows XP Pro
HD : 80 GB

Try a different USB 2.0 PCI card

Some cards just cause problems in some computers. How easy is it for you to return it for another brand (with a different chipset) or a refund?

What is the make and model of the card?

XP is SP2?

Just a thought. . .

Can you get into the BIOS and disable the USB-1 ports? Then maybe try to install the card?
