Trouble downloading antivirus package

Oct 13, 2008 11:00AM PDT

My Dell Inspiron laptop is 5 years old and since the beginning I have used the free AVG antivirus, updating automatically, and have had no problems with this. My hard drive frizzled a few weeks ago and after I reinstalled the new one, in setting up the new programs, I found that the AVG Free version 8 is huge (43MB file size) and my dial-up internet connection simply cannot handle downloading it. I downloaded a Download Manager (Firefox's) and it was supposedly going to take only 8 hours to download (vs almost 1Cool but, when 85% complete, it stopped downloading with a message "file too large".

A friend has DSL, so I took a disk to her house, used her computer, and downloaded AVG Free v.8.0. When I tried to add it to my Program File, I got a message that "this is not a valid win 32 file".

I also noticed that what I downloaded was only 134KB in size.

I downloaded from Cnet's site, and had the file downloaded directly to the disk.

Is this enough info for anyone to tell me what I may have done wrong? I am using a McAfee 30-day free trial for the time being, but would really like to have AVG back.

Thank you so much for your help. I really am at a loss here... Happy

Thanks for your help!

Now, if I copy that link and go to the library and paste it into the search engine, would I then be able to download the info onto the disk?

Or should I go to this thread on the library computer and directly click on it to download it onto a cd?

Did I mention that I am not very experienced with this kind of situation?! Wink Thank you!

Easier to: 'go to this thread on the library computer..'

...and directly click on it to download it onto a cd?"

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your help, Grif. I like to try to figure these things out for myself, but after floundering around for a while it's so much easier to ask someone who knows these things. Your assistance is very appreciated.
