Trouble booting Unbuntu

May 28, 2007 9:40PM PDT

I downloaded an iso from the unbuntu web site and extracted the files, and booted from the CD, but i am getting a command prompt and it will not let me do anything else when i try to boot from the unbuntu cd. How do i install this OS over windows and how can i preview the OS by booting it like the web site says. any feed back would be great!

That doesn't sound right.

Recheck the instructions on how to create a CD from an ISO. There is no step where you extract files.

Ok, i created 2 cds when i started this unbuntu thing, and one of them was the iso right on the CD. i used Nero and created a bootable cd. and then the other one i used 7z to extract the files and burned them on a cd using Nero and the bootable CD, both of them came up with the same command prompt.

Try another ISO.

Since this is your first ISO it could be a bum one. Extracting files is an interesting idea from an ISO but is not in any instructions I've seen.

I have created many iso images on CDs before, but this one is just not working. I am only asking about what to type in the command line that comes up each time i boot from the CD.

Thanks

The return key.

The LiveCDs I've used only need me to press the enter key to continue. Most will just move on in some number of seconds.

All that you have written points to a bum image or a distro (need a direct link!) that isn't for most of us.

I will try that and post my results later!

You have Nero Express?
May 29, 2007 12:58AM PDT

Using "image, project, copy", burn the downloaded ISO (as an image) to a cd; it should take 1 cd only, not 2.

i tried it
May 29, 2007 7:42AM PDT

i tried booting again from the iso image and pushing enter, but it brought up another command line. I thought this was supposed to be easy to do???

It would be better if you shared...

If you told or shared the download page you used, I could doublecheck what's up.

Downloading now.

When I'm done I'll use an ISO burning program. I'll try CDBURNERXP and it's method at http://www.cdburnerxp.se/help/burniso (page down a little to see the dialog boxes.)

PS> Be back in about an hour?

No, you are not suppose to boot from an ISO.
May 29, 2007 4:27PM PDT

You have to create a bootable cd from the ISO image that you have downloaded. How many file do you have on that cd? Take a look.

i have one file on that CD

Bingo.
May 29, 2007 11:40PM PDT

You shouldn't see that .iso FILE on the CD. It means the disk was not made correctly.

I made mine with CDBURNERXP using the link above. You didn't tell me you didn't do it my way. Next time tell us.

With 512MB RAM, 2.0 GHz Athlon 64, it's taken about 3 minutes to get to the desktop. When the boot menu showed I pressed "Enter."

Tell me about your test machine.

Tell me EXACTLY what is on the command line.
May 29, 2007 10:16AM PDT

If it is a command line, does ls work?

The boot process did have a blank screen with a blinking underscore for a long time so if it crashed there I think some could call that a command line.

When it boots, it loads all the crap it needs to load, and then stops on a command line. It is set to drive A, which is nothing on my laptop, and i tried to boot from my CD Drive C:\start CD.exe and it did nothing, but said the command was invalid

Looks like a procedural error.

Did you burn it as a bootable disc? If you burn it as a bootable disc, nero & alcohol generally add a small dos-loading track that emulates a floppy disc, and then boots off that.

Since you selected burn as a bootable disc and not as a Write ISO then everything is as it should be and you'll never see Ubuntu.

Try it the way I noted.

more problems
May 29, 2007 11:35AM PDT

I tired the program u suggested, CDBurnerXP Pro, and i burned an iso disk as ISO level 1, then booting it, i got the following error message

CANNOT LOAD DOS! Anykey to retry.

i retried it, and did the same

Have someone else make this one for you.

At least we know a bit more. Did you select the option "FINALIZE DISK"?

Some machines won't work unless you do this. I thought you had made such disks before...

DO NOT burn as "Bootable"
Jun 5, 2007 7:09PM PDT

In Nero, you use the "Burn Image To Disc" option, NOT "burn a bootable CD".

I'll explain: The "Burn a bootable CD" option creates a CD containing the DR-DOS system, plus one ISO file. This doesn't work, as it's treating the ISO file as just another file, not as a disc image.

You need to use "Burn Image to Disc", because the Ubuntu disc image already contains everything it needs to be bootable.

If you're still having trouble, why not go to http://shipit.ubuntu.com and order a disc for free? Or you could ask at a local Linux User Group for a preburnt copy.

Solution to your 2 pages of issues
Jul 13, 2008 4:01AM PDT

visit this site...
http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/

download application for your system.

Then download a fresh copy to your desktop from this site.
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Open your infra recorder,
DO NOT COPY THE FILE!!!! Find the setting that will copy the Image to disk, then proceed.

Once you have figured out the proper burning of an image to the disc you are set to use your live CD.

Restart Windows with the CD in the drive (make sure that your BIOS is set to run from the CD Drive first, If you don't know what that means then don't worry about it).

Remember you are not copying a file, you are burning the .iso image to the disc. Your system will not recognize a file as an OS on start up.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of Ubuntu!!!
