Triple page number above footnote

I was helping my sister with her masters thesis in word (2003)yesterday and did the follwong 3 actions:
-dividing the whole teks into sections
-adding a unique header and a common footer to each section
-adding a page number

I noticed that every page that contained a footnote, also showed the pagenumber 3 times just above the footnote. I have no idea how or why and it seems impossible to delete this. It is gray (just like the header and footer) when working in the plain text. And it becomes black when clicking in the header or footer box, but still it is not editable. Has anybody encoutered this anoying problem before?

problem solved. Page numbers were entered in the footer-text. By entering them via the normal way, the numbers disapear.
