General discussion

Tried updating to SP2, but after a downtime of 1+hrs...

Nothing to update or ???

I have an older Compaq Presario 2104 which has XP Home w/ SP1.
After reading the forums' warning to update the XP OS, clicked the icon to
''update all'' nothing seemed to download incl. SP2. ( I color code my MAC files
so I know when something new is added. I haven't found the same feature on the PC.
I admit I haven't played/explored much this on machine. I have it only for
the software that doesn't work well on the MAC.)

After the long wait on a dial-up, received a message--so sorry.

Played ring-around-the-rosey on MS, guess I always chose the wrong hotlink.

Question: do we pay MS for the SP2. If so should I write to MS and request
a cd OR is this something best done in a store and buy what? new OS.

(2nd question: anyone else having a problem reading the forum
since the last update, 2-3 months ago. I no longer get a wordwrap of
messages and must scroll waaaaaaaaaay to the right , and waaaaaaaaaay
the left to read. Now I keep open my word and copy/paste to it to get
the message on a readable screen AND visit much less. (I keyed
breaks so I could read the preview screen, sorry if they weren't right.)
I have iBook OS 9.2, I.E 5.1.5. Maybe
a moderator can
redirect this? I have tried saying this in other spots of ''give us your opinion".)

Better to order the cd....

at 272mb it's a long wait on dialup. Or you may try it on some friends broadband.

Thanks Michael. I'll try again on the MS download site.

I assume they will take a credit card and charge ??$$. Hope I don't go down
the wrong rabbit hole again. It sound so easy,
''just click here, etc.'' until I start clicking. Guess I'm just wired wrong/differently.

Thanks again.

You can order the CD directly from the Windows Update site.

or from this Microsoft Page; Order a CD It's free of charge.

I'm not sure about your other problem re text size. Some browsers support the CTRL + or CTRL - (plus or minus signs on the keypad), to change text size. Does this work with you?

Failing that, have you changed your screen resolution recently?

Thx Mark, it should arrive in 4-6 wks. Cnet is the only...

site that has ''lost'' its wordwrap to fit my 12'' screen on the iBook, 9.2, I.E. 5.1.7, Norton Firewall.
Even hitting smaller on the toolbar does not correct the overrun.

I limit my online work to the iBook using a graphite Airport connection instead
of the direct phone link on the Compaq--no separate router and haven't
figured out how to use it with the Airport. I do have Zone Alarm and Spycatcher on the Compaq
but afraid I'm too careless to be trusted with broadband and PC.

Don't get SP2
Jun 11, 2005 2:40AM PDT

Don't get SP2. Just don't, especially if it's a slower/older system. SP2 offer no benefits whatsoever, other than slowing down your machine. Also, there is a chance of something going wrong while installing SP2. It may force you to reformat and reinstall. These things are rare, but happened before. There is a reason why new brand name computers only ships with a SP1 version of Windows XP.

Thx for the "heads-up".

Glad I don't use this machine online any more than I need to.
