to un-install both Zone alarm and AVG and restart your computer.
I would then run a registry cleaner, like Easy Cleaner or jv16 power tools.
Restart the computer.
See if you can connect. If you cannot connect, and I guessing that you're using a wireless router, try WinSock XP Fix.
Go and download AVG and install it. After you have it completely installed, then download Zone Alarm.
After you install Zone alarm, carefully allow your connections. What I'm saying is don't click deny without thinking about it first. Some connections are needed to connect to your network, printer, etc.

The Norton trial on my grandfather's Vista laptop was nearing its end, so I went to download and install ZoneAlarm and AVG (the two I have on my computer) for him. So I downloaded ZoneAlarm and ran the installation, during which time AVG was still downloading. At some point near the end (if not at the end) of the ZA installation the internet suddenly died, and the AVG download froze at 11%.
I checked ZoneAlarm and restarted the laptop a few times. In the log there were occurrences of something called "ntli.net" (there was something before the "ntli" but I forget; both our ISPs are Virgin Media which used to be called NTL). At first I added a few of those to the trusted zone but it didn't seem to be doing much good so I removed them from the trusted zone just in case. I also put on the internet lock, intending then to unlock it and as it were reset it, except I couldn't turn the lock off, and I didn't have a great deal of time.
When I got the laptop home (and plugged in my own internet connection, a virtually identical Virgin Media connection) I accidentally forgot about the internet lock and went ahead and uninstalled ZoneAlarm. No luck. I then system restored to a checkpoint about 20 minutes before I started downloading ZoneAlarm. Still no luck. I then uninstalled Norton and disabled Windows Firewall. Luck=false. Any attempt to diagnose the problem on the laptop results in "a problem with the network adapter" and none of its suggestions/repairs work. It tells me that all the connections (LAN, Wireless and Dial-Up) are disconnected (obviously LAN shouldn't be as the ethernet cable is plugged in and the cable modem is lit up).
By the way, the internet from that same modem works fine on my XP PC with both ZoneAlarm and AVG running on it.
