Trend Micro Housecall and Java

Dec 21, 2005 12:04AM PST

For some time I have been using Housecall and I have always been very pleased with the way it performs however on my last visit to the site there had been a change and Housecall would not run without downloading Java. This I did and the subsequent scan took ages to complete. I see from other posts that there has been some discussion about the change to the Trend Micro site, but what is Java? All I can find is the program file, an entry in Add Remove progs, AN AMAZING 119mb, and a Control Panel that tells me nothing about it.

Do I really need Java to run Housecall? What else is Java used for? I see there is "Console" in Internet Tools but have no idea what that is for.

Any help would be appreciated.

Judes, About Java
Dec 21, 2005 1:10AM PST

Java is coding that various webpages use to display specific types of content..Many websites use Java to make their sites more interesting and show graphics, etc. Although Java isn't a "required" program, it certainly helps most computing experiences work better. I have it installed on all the machines I take care of.

Here's a link to a definition:

Although Housecall use to have two different versions, once with Java and one without, it appears like their current scanner requires Java and the other version is no longer available. Yes, you are correct..The newest Housecall scan does take much longe to complete but I will still continue to use it when I need a "second opinion" for viruses.

Hope this helps.

I just let Java run in the background and that there is nothing to do.

Thanks for your help Grif. Merry Christmas.
