Transparent toolbars

I've been trying to make windows XP look like vista. Does anyone know of a FREE program that can make the tool bars and stuff transparent like the vista aero glass effect. So far all I've found is Windows Blinds which I'd have to pay for and programs which turn the whole window transparent.

And even Window Blinds will be pretty limited in what it can do. Aero is a major reworking of a lot of the Windows internals, and XP will never be able to duplicate those abilities. So, you have four options that I can think of.

1: Upgrade to Vista
2: Get a Mac (virtually every graphical change in Vista was copied from OS X... Poorly)
3: Use Linux (if you enable the Composite features)
4: Abandon the idea completely

Take your pick.

free no, but windowblinds and a few other app will copy all most all of vista eye candy. including 3d flip, glass, sidebar that auto hides.i have it set up on my xp drive and you would have a job to tell the difference
from my visa drive.

Vista represent a pretty massive reworking of some of the Windows internals to allow the use of DirectX on the desktop, just like Mac OS X has been using OpenGL for Aqua since the first release 5-6 years ago. All Windows versions prior to Vista are limited to GDI or GDI+, which is a 2D only drawing library.

Windows Blinds will never be able to properly emulate the effects of Vista on any other version of Windows. They can use a lot of clever little tricks to come close, but the method is going to hit a technical brick wall very quickly. And since it's all done using software rendering, it's likely to be very resource intensive, just like Vista's Aero, though Aero has the excuse of being poorly implemented.

You may be able to get some of the basic effects emulated, but don't hold out any hope that Windows Blinds will be able to keep pace with what people will eventually start doing with Vista's Aero interface. Just for starters, there's no way Windows Blinds could ever do even a respectable job of emulating one of the coolest OS X features, Expose. Aero at least has a chance, though I doubt it'll ever be anywhere near as slick.

hi, the original question was about transparent toolbars, and i stand by my comment on that. you can have a windowblind skin that does that, with out the rest of the window being transparent. microsoft forced it to be pulled, but you can still get it if you look hard enough. as i say i can not think of any bit of eye candy that is on vista that you can not get on xp. as you say windowblinds is not the complete answer, as i use many other app to complete the job. but at the end of the day it is a bit of fun, not an attempt to make xp match vista. there are also tranformation packs to imitate vista that don`t use windowblinds as well. i know a vista skinned xp will never be vista or run as fast, as my real vista but that is not the point.it is only about the look.
