Transferring RAM to a new notebook?

If I buy a notebook with a free RAM slot, can I transfer the 512mb RAM chip from my desktop? Assuming the desktop and notebook use the same type (DIMM, SDRAM, etc.) Also,is there an easy way of telling what kind of RAM I've got in my desktop?

I've yet to see a laptop that uses the rather large desktop memory sticks.
