Transferring Network/Internet Settings to New PC

Feb 18, 2006 3:18AM PST

Hi all.

I just got a Gateway 5040 running Windows XP Media edition. My current PC is an HP Pavilion 740n running Windows XP Home SP2, everything up-to-date. I was going to run Intellimover to transfer files and settings to the new PC.

I connect to the web over a shared network connection with my landlord. He installed the software, etc. on the HP Pavilion for the shared DSL connection and needed to use his password, etc.

Instead of bugging him to set it up on the new PC, will Intellimover (or something else) move all that info to the new PC so I can connect to the web? Or will I have to ask him to re-do the installation. It's a HomePortal router, from sbcglobal.net.

Thanks for your help.

Brent

Thanks, but a question
Feb 18, 2006 3:48AM PST

Thank you for the link to the article, R.

The F.A.S.T. looks like a better alternative (and cheaper, since I already have it). Actually, Intellimover and F.A.S.T. look identical from the screenshots.

But, F.A.S.T., like Intellimover, only specifically mentions "dial-up connections" will be transferred. Which is why I'm unsure if "dial-up connections" also includes DSL and other types of network connections. The link you provided, the MS knowledge base, and the manuals I've read do not mention anything about DSL or cable network connections.

While I can always ask the LL to re-do it, I'd like to just migrate everything and not have to bother him.

Thanks, again.

Brent

FAST doesn't work
Feb 20, 2006 9:06AM PST

I did "try it". FAST just did not work. Finally, found out that naming the new computer the same as the old computer did the trick and it was recognized.

Just have to say that when I'm asking for information/help, to be told to just "try it" comes across as somewhat condescending. I'm not totally computer illiterate and I'm not a garage geek. I fall somewhere in between. So before I've even posted a question here, I've googled, yahooed, and asked tech folks I know. I ask here in the hopes that folks in a larger community will have had a similar experience and have some info/ideas other than to just "try it". That's the kind of help I expect from a call center.

A lot of supposedly "straight forward" stuff is not all that straight forward. Right now, I want to network the new and old PC using USB cables. I do have the correct cables for it, but finding any simple information on how to do it is ridiculously difficult. Parallel connections? You bet. Serial connections? No prob. Infrared connections? Sure. USB - conflicting info and directions that are poorly written at best. I'll probably start with the info from MS's knowledgebase and see how things go.

Thank you.
