General discussion

transferring music files

Sep 15, 2005 1:13PM PDT

I've just bought an Ibook G3 notebook with OSX. I'd like to know if I send downloaded music from Apple's music service from this notebook, to my daughter's Imac G3 desktop with OS9.2? If she could play this downloaded music [saved?], it would be great. Thaks much. Eric

Short answer

No.
Music purchased from the iTunes music store is "protected" and will only play on the machine that downloaded the music. However, you can Share this music, from your machine, with up to 5 other users on your network.
However, your daughter is running an early version of iTunes which does not have the capability to look for shared music library's.
If you burn CD of the tracks on your machine and import them into your daughters iTunes. Of course, this is technically stealing, but as the G3 is actually yours, and your daughter is only using it until she gets one of her own, it is considered "Fair Use"

Hope this helps

Itunes Sharing
Sep 15, 2005 10:33PM PDT

Thanks, it did help - and, uncovered an omission I had made in my earlier post. With my daughter's G3 with OS9.2 she's unable to download Itunes, or any other downloadable music services either. So, my intention really would be to try to use her G3 as a sort of passive 'player', for the music that the G3 notebook with OSX has downloaded from Itunes. But from your comments, I see that the copyright issues might defeat the project. Sorry for the confusion; thanks.

There is a version of iTunes that will run on OS 9.x.x
Hard to believe that iTunes, and the iPod, was around before OS X and the iTunes Music Store.
Run over to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75104 and you will be able to download a copy of iTunes v1.0 that will run on OS 9.2.2
She will then be able to import CD's, including those burned from your version of iTunes.
It "may" even be possible for her to purchase music from the store using that version. It's worth a try and the software is free

Thanks, but after clicking on the link in your response & doing a very thourough search, no go. Actually, the page appears to be 'dead or discontinued'; the download button is clearly visible, but some of the graphics etc are not present, and there are blank spots etc. I also searched in some 'discussions' and elsewhere for references to 'Itunes/Mac OS9.2' etc and can up blank every time. I'd imagine the Apple world has moved on from supporting this current little G3 desktop. What do you think? Anywhere else to try? Thanks much, Eric

The link is good.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75104

Click on the little icon that looks like a disk, with additions, that is in the main bar and has the column heading of Software Update.
This takes you to another page with a section on the right, the title of which is iTunes for OS 9.
Leave the email address, first name and last name blank. Make sure there is no check mark in the "Yes, send me Apple....." box.
Directly underneath "2. Get the US/English iTunes....." there is a missing button. signified by the question mark. Click it. It starts the download of iTunes.
Let me know how you get on. If you can't do it that way, we do have a plan C

Progress, but...

You were right on the button on the second link! I downloaded the Itunes 2.02 version available & it works well, but it's a 'player' only, radio tuner etc. I can't find in it any link or 'access' to the Itunes 'store' where we can actually purchase & download music. It seems to be 'player' only. What do you think? Thanks again, Eric

iTunes

You are correct. When that version of iTunes was released, there was no such thing as the iTunes Music Store.
However, now your daughter has a place to play the CD's that she has and the Cd's that you burn for her.
I don't think there is a version of iTunes, for OS 9, that works with the iTunes Music Store. OS X had been out for a while before that happened

Thanks for trying on all this; eagerly awaiting here delivery soon of our new G3 Ibook with the much needed Mac X ready to go. That'll solve many issues entirely. Thanks again - Eric

I was under the impression that you already had the iBook and that this is why you had these questions.

Enjoy it
