Transferring Data from XP box (IDE) to Vista Admin issues!

Jul 19, 2007 11:05AM PDT

Alright, to make a long story short, my old box had hardware failures and so I decided to get a new machine. The new machine has Vista Home Premium. The old machine ran XP Pro SP2.

After buying an external IDE to USB data transfer device (awesome!) and copying data from all of my old drives, I ran into a problem when I got into the old C: drive.

I can't access all of the files & folders I need to get to, to transfer the data.

Is there a way to tell it to grant me complete, 100%, no limit access to the files on the XP drive, so I can get everything I want transferred over?

I keep right clicking>properties>unchecking read only and hidden on the folders and Vista will do it's thing for about ten minutes and I'm thinking everything should show now, BUT NO!!!

I searched for TXT files I know were on the drive, but they don't show up in the search results, along with many others. Also, is it possible to import the cookies to the new machine? I imported the favorites (bookmark) without any problems, but I can't even get to the temporary internet cache folder. It simply doesn't appear.

Is there a way that I can get it to work or am I screwed? I can't just boot up the ole XP drive on the new sys, as the hardware is different and xp would have a fit.

A bit more info....

Just to clarify a bit, I have granted full authority to these folders and even the root, but it's like it doesn't matter, it's still hiding stuff.

Two things...

1.) Take ownership of the private files/folders, a necessity when dealing with your Documents and Settings folder.

2.) Ensure EFS was not used to encrypt the files. If it was and you did not backup your key your only option is to pay $100+ for recovery software.

Let us know how it goes.

Right on!

Thanks man! Taking ownership did the trick. Now I gotta figure out what to do with three IDE drives! 2 20 gigs and a 40. I formatted them and I might just keep the device and use them for additional storage, but I have a ton of space on my new drive and a bunch of dvd/rw's that need using.

Good problem to have I guess lol. Appreciate the help!
