Transferring company data from old to new computer

Mar 4, 2004 4:50AM PST

I'm trying to find out how to transfer my company data from my old computer to my newer computer. I have an old version of Quickbooks Pro (99) on the old computer and just installed Quickbook Pro 2004 on the newer one.
There is too much data to put on floppy. I purchased a direct cable connection for PC to PC file transfer, DB 25 male to male Parallel. Old PC is a Packard Bell
Legend 144 CDT with Windows 95 and new PC is a HP Pavilion V70 with windows ME.

The cheapest method for me is a CDRW drive and connect it as long as I need it on the old machine.

If you want to try the Parallel Cable, here's the DCC article. Rememer I won't duplicate it's content here...

Links are in that article and I must repeat that I won't duplicate the information here.

Backup!
Mar 4, 2004 6:55AM PST

There's one aspect here overseen. Company data should be backupped! Data on a hard disk is sure to be lost, the only uncertainty being if it will be tomorrow (might even be tonight!) or in ten years. This can be because of mechanical failure, or because of virusses.
Losing all data on customers, orders and money will be a big burden for many companies, and some would go broke immediately (just imagine your bank or telephone company).
It's totally unresponsible (for yourself and for your customers) not to backup the company's data on a regular basis (daily or weekly, depending on the transaction count). I won't mention your private data on the hard disk.

The answer to your question should have been: restore the data from your W95 backup on your Me machine.

Better buy a cd-burner on your computer (it's a good backup medium, if floppies are to small). An outdated alternative is a zip-drive. But a simple USB memory-stick (64, 128 Mb) is a possibility also, for backup and file transfer both, but I'm afraid it won't go with Windows 95.

And, as Bob said, start with using it on the old computer wouldn't be a bad idea. But, of course, DCC would work also, if you can get the settings right with the help of the links provided.
It would also be possible to hook the old drive in the new computer, and use Explorer to transfer files.
