Transferring bought & paid for Windows 7 Home Premium

Jun 18, 2010 1:05PM PDT

I want to know how to transfer a Windows 7 Home Premium installation to a different laptop.
I bought Windows 7 Home Premium for my daughter's laptop and installed it. She has bought a new laptop and is wanting to sell the old one - with the OE Windows Vista installed so I can install that Windows 7 on my laptop.

Can anyone tell me how to transfer the license?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Nothing too difficult

Nothing too difficult. Just remove it from the system you're selling and you're done. If you go to install it later, and you're given any trouble activating, just call the number and explain the situation.

That's supported.

If you bought and paid for a RETAIL version of Windows, all transfer just fine. You didn't reveal if this was some OEM version so I'll write the story about RETAIL moves.

If you installed this RETAIL version to a laptop there is NO UNINSTALL. This can be horrible for some but the fix is easy. Just get your files all out and remove it from the internet for just a bit.

INSTALL YOUR RETAIL OS on the new machine then use the transfer wizard if you want then the final step. Use the restore media on the old laptop to blow off the Windows you installed there.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. It is a store bought off the shelf Windows 7 Home Premium installation.
On the laptop she wants to sell, that one I was thinking on installing the OEM Windows Vista it came with. Happy

Then you're good.

While we can gripe about the hoops you'll jump through to get there, you appear to have the right parts to get it done.
