Transfering media using two different camcorders

Jul 6, 2009 10:25AM PDT

Hi all,
I just bought a CANON XH-A1 and would like to keep it in top condition for as long as possible. To do this I would like to use a different camcorder, a SAMSUNG SCD86, to transfer the footage (to minimize the use of the playhead on the canon). Will using a camcorder of significantly lower caliber as a tape deck to my computer affect the quality of my footage?
Thanks

Only a test will prove it.

But for years miniDV was shot on the camcorder and then a miniDV "deck" was used by many without issue. Did you try?

both camcorders are aligned similarly, when you capture DV format video with the XHA1, you *should* be able to transfer the DV format video using either the Canon or the Samsung.

But it would be such a waste to not shoot 1080i, high definition, video with that XHA1...

And if you capture HDV format video with the XHA1 and put that tape into the DV (or DV widescreen), non-HDV Samsung, the SCD86 will not understand what is on that tape.

At very least, you would need something that can deal with HDV - more like a Canon HV30 or Sony HDR-HC9...
