Transfering files from a desktop to a laptop

What is the easiest was to transfer a large amount of data from my desktop to my laptop? The desktop doesn't have a CD or DVD burner so that option is out.

I don't have a router hooked up to my desktop comp though. Can I transfer through a LAN or USB cable?
