transfering Family tree maker to new second hard drive

Mar 8, 2004 5:47AM PST

Hi, I just installed a new second hard drive and would like to transfer family tree maker program with all the entries I have put in the program from my boot drive. Is there a way I can do this without buying a program to do the transfering. Helppppp. Thanks, Ruth

- backup the data (which of course you already do, because you risk losing the whole family tree if you don't)
- uninstall the program
- reinstall the program to a location on the new disk (say, d:\program files in stead of c:\program files)
- determine where the program expects its files
- restore the data from the backup to the new location

This is how I understand your question. But I can't see any reason why anybody would want a d:\program files folder, so possibly I understand it incorrectly.
Then tell again.

Kees, I have to much on my first hard drive and want to put some on the second drive like family files and games. The games I am not worried about, just family tree maker with all my families. So if I backup the files, install the family tree program on the second drive and restore the files I should be OK. I'm not sure if I understand, why your not sure, you understand what I am talking about. I think you got it. Thanks, Ruth

that I assumed the program files itself won't be taking so much place as to make much difference on the use of the c:-drive. But I might be quite mistaken. Anyway, it doesn't mind.
In the post below I read the same idea, so I assume it's OK.

Games often put quite a lot of files in program files, so that certainly would make a difference.

Well I don't know about the transfer from one drive to another. Why can't you just install FTM on your second drive? Make a B/U disc of your family files then transfer them to FTM on the second drive. I have FTM and use Direct CD to make a B/U of my family files just in case something happens. It's what they call packet writing to be used with FTM backups. Either that or you'll need a bunch of floppys for a B/U. More help is available at the FTM help center.
