Transfering data between PCs

Can anyone tell me is it possible to simply connect two PCs together with a network cable to tranfer data between both PC without using a router? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Check this site

If you decide on USB to USB, heed the warning against using a regular USB cable.

Hope this points you in the right direction

I think I might try the pure ethernet connection as described on the link you posted. My desktop PC has a build in ethernet adapter, and so does my laptop. All I need to buy is a Cat5e cable. My desktop is running Windows XP home, and my laptop had XP Pro. I take it that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for your help.

in my opinion since you already have NICs in both systems. Just be sure that you get a CAT5 crossover cable
