If the article had worked, I wouldn't have posted my message. As I just bought this computer, I doubt spyware is a problem. I would appreciate any other ideas someone may have.

The Microsoft KB article does work.
However the files open message may point to spyware, an antivirus that is scanning incoming email or other issues. Best of luck.

There have been similar posts on this, but I'm not aware of a solution yet. My old computer is Win 98, with Outlook Express 4. My new computer is Win XP, with Outlook Express 6. I can't figure out any way to get my old message folders into OE 6.
I have tried the import function, and I have tried just copying the files into the OE 6 folder, but neither works. Using the import function, I get the error message, "no messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open..." The files are not read-only.
I have also already checked the MS website that has been referenced for this issue.
Any other ideas?
