Question

Transfer Inquiry Using File Explorer

Apr 8, 2018 12:45PM PDT

Probably a simple answer, but current situation is inconvenient. Comfortable with Win 7, I’m new to Win 10 and File Explorer. Working example:

1) Insert flash drive and identify a Word file I want to transfer to laptop
2) There is a list on the left-side of my major locations (Downloads, Documents, Pictures, etc.)
3) Within Documents are folders KingfishWord & KingfishExcel that I created -- but they don’t show up in that left-side view
4) I can drag & drop my flash drive file to Documents, then later move it into the KingfishWord folder
5) I would rather transfer it directly to the KingfishWord folder or any folder within that folder

It feels like the “view” default needs to be altered but I’m not seeing it. Can you help?
Thank you,
TheKingfish

This sounds like you want to add to the Send To.

No wish to add to Send To - Rather the need for a Drop-Down
Apr 9, 2018 11:34AM PDT

Thanks for your feedback. In Win 7, Explorer gives me a left-side menu with folders shown. If I hover my mouse in that area, to the left of each folder a small right-pointing arrow will appear next to each folder. If I click on that arrow, a drop-down will show all folders within that folder. I can then subsequently repeat that process for more drop-down folders to appear, and so forth. Once I find my desired deposit-folder, I drag & drop the file. Simple.

In Win 10, hovering the mouse in that area produces no “small right-pointing arrow next to each folder.” Therefore I cannot proceed as before. Should I assume this small but key functional feature was discarded in Win 10? As in -- a downgrade? Surely this can’t be true and I just need to activate some famously-hidden MS switch to make it happen.
Thank you,

Just re-tested the hover on W10 WFE
Apr 9, 2018 12:04PM PDT

WFE is short for Windows File Explorer.

The > symbol did show up and clicking on the symbol expanded the view just fine.

I am on bog standard Windows 10 Home and Pro here. If it's not showing I can only guess what's different.

The Hover Symbol (>) Eludes Me; Yet Another MS Mystery

Once again, thanks for your input. It appears I have underestimated my WFE problem; seemingly not as simple as first thought. Unless anyone else has remedial input, I will venture forth from here into the wilderness -- in search of an answer.
