It was never needed

It was never needed, the easy file transfer. If you can set up a basic LAN with file sharing abilities, you can just drag and drop the files you want to copy from one system to the other same as if you were copying them to a flash drive or external HDD. You could also use an external HDD. Copy the files from one computer to the ext. HDD, then reverse the process on the other computer.

Do note that you can't transfer programs, only files. So you can transfer Word documents, but not Word.

Check at MS

Check the MS support website and find that "easy transfer" is supported. To check this on your PC, goto desktop and type in [easy] no brackets. It should display the file name of easy and/or its associated files. If not, then goto MS download and and get it. As Jimmy pointed out, you can get files or data over but not the pgms. You still need to install the pgm. in order fully get all running again. If you had used the "basic default" install procedure of your pgm. it should transfer over from PC-PC, but that's not always a given.

FYI- I just got a more upto date easy file transfer cable setup from Wally world, and it readily states it supports Win 8.x. Again, if not found in Win 8.x, then you can install easy transfer to it. YES, the s/w provided on the disc is MS own easy transfer s/w. Also, under easy transfer s/w, besides the direct cable setup, you can use other media, once you configure for it just as ext. HD or flash drive. You may want to test it that way in some form, IMHO.

What about using a flash drive?
Sep 22, 2014 7:42AM PDT

I went from a XP computer to Windows 8.1. After I installed my programs, I got a 16gb flash drive and copied the files over from the directory listing folder by folder. Took me about 2 days. Still haven't transferred my emails although I set up a new email program Thunderbird. I guess that's one way to clean out all my old emails, lol.
