Transfer files from Windows Vista to Windows 7 using CD

Oct 26, 2009 8:56PM PDT

Is it possible to use a CD to transfer files from a Windows Vista pc to a Windows 7 pc using a CD? I'm trying to transfer files in My Documents to the same folder in Windows 7, but when I right click and select Send To, there is no selection for My Documents. So, how do I transfer the files?

Vista doesn't have a My Documents folder

And Windows 7 is the same. What you see as My Documents is a Junction point, a type of shortcut to allow older software to install files as if Vista was like XP.

What you need is the location C:\Users\[Account Name}\Documents, where {Account Name} is the name of your account.

However, if you can right click a file and select Send to, can you see your CD/DVD drive listed? If so, that is how to copy, (burn), the document to a CD/DVD recordable or Re-Writeable disk.

Personally I wouldn't use Windows to do that. Most system nowadays come with burning software pre-installed, eg Nero, and I would use that to burn data to CD/DVD. If you don't have that, you could use a free utility called "cdburnerxp". Despite the XP in the name, it is compatible with Vista.

Another method would be to buy a USB stick, copy the data to that, and then copy over to the Windows 7 system. Much quicker and easier.
