Transfer email addresses between old and new computer

Jun 12, 2010 1:09AM PDT

I have a new computer, with Windows 7. On my old computer with Windows XP I mainly used Microsoft Outlook (office 2003) for email (although I also use Rogers Yahoo mail, with separate address). I used the oulook address/contacts) system for keeping phone numbers and street addresses on the old computer. I have followed the microsoft directions for transferring address books to the new computer, although they seem to make it needlessly complicated. Surely this is a vital component of an email system, so why is it not made automatic, or at least simple, to transfer? My problem is that after doing all I am told to do (I think), I finally get a message telling me "You do not have authority...). So net result is that all those addresses remain on the old hard drive somewhere.

Address book and contacts transfer
Jun 20, 2010 1:58AM PDT

Thanks for the reply, but Office 2003 as used with the old computer with XP, was installed onto the new computer with Windows 7, and in general all aspects work without glitches including sending and receiving new emails, but when I follow the export/import directions for transferring Outlook files to the new computer via my external hard drive, at the last stage of import I am told I "do not have authority" to complete the transfer. As I said, it seems strange to me that instructions for this transfer are not explicit, easily found and easily executed since maintaining email addresses are a vital part of email activity. At this time my only option is to make new address book/contact list "manually".

Sorry

I can't tell if you took the hint that the patches corrected the authority issue here. I noted there was a catch about Office 2003 on 7 yet I feel I may have to write with more force about this as more than once folk don't understand the patches were not optional on 7.

Sorry, I forgot to say that the Office Service Pak 3 was already installed.

Thank you.

Now to rewind a bit.

Can you write in "quotes" the error message?
Is this account an admin account?
Is there any registry guard software installed?
(teatimer, norton, others?)

And I know it is asking a lot but is there an Event Viewer entry created when this happens?

Thanks for your interest, with those detailed questions, some of which I did not understand, but it stimulated me to look at the "permission" details under the .pst file properties, and while I do not quite know how, since again the process was convoluted, I did manage to change this "property" in a way which allowed transfer, so I am now all OK. Just why the "permission" had not been allowed in the first instance I have no idea, these being home computers home installed.
