Transfer cable

Jul 5, 2009 9:56PM PDT

Have purchased a new Dell compuer with Vista O/S and wish to transfer data, user accounts, files and folders, etc, from old computer XP. I plan to transfer data to a USB 120 gb h.d then to the new computer. Can I do this using a standard USB cable or do I need to use (Belkin)transfer cable to the H.D and then to Vista or would it be best to transfer computer to computer using the transfer cable. Due to lack of space the use of the usb h.d would be much less of a problem. Advice is appreciated

Windows Easy Transfer helps you easily move the files and settings stored on your PC running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or even Windows Vista to a new PC running Windows Vista.

An Easy Transfer Cable is a special USB cable that is designed to work with Windows Easy Transfer by creating a direct link between your old PC and your new PC. Using one of these cables is the easiest and fastest method for transfer and is recommended if you don't have access to a network. An Easy Transfer Cable will transfer data from PCs running Windows XP or Windows Vista to a PC running Windows Vista.

Thanks for the reply but I already have that information from the web site. I was hoping to find out if I could use the transfer of data (User accounts, files and folders, etc) XP to the USB 120gb hard drive then to the new (Visa) computer and if I have to use the "Windows Easy Transfer Cable" with the software supplied or, as I have been told, just use a standard USB cable from the old computer via the USB h.d to the new one via the USB h.d ,ie no special cable or software.Direct transfer would be simpler but it means having both computers operating at the same time which could be a problem
Thanks again.

Yes and no...

"I was hoping to find out if I could use the transfer of data (User accounts, files and folders, etc) XP to the USB 120gb hard drive then to the new (Visa) computer."
-> Yes, you can do that. Use Windows Easy Transfer (free) to backup that data from your Windows XP computer to the external hard drive, then transfer it to the new Windows Vista computer when ready.

"if I have to use the "Windows Easy Transfer Cable" with the software supplied or, as I have been told, just use a standard USB cable from the old computer via the USB h.d to the new one via the USB h.d"
-> No special cable is necessary, and the Windows Easy Transfer Cable would actually not work in this case. It is meant for connecting two computers, not a computer and a hard drive.

Hope this helps,
John

Data transfer

You can send files (saved to docs, pics etc) to an external HDD (USB) and then load to your vista system, no problem or you could use a flash drive to do the same thing.
