Track your kids by cell phone?

May 1, 2006 8:27AM PDT

{B}Do you know where your kids are? Now you can find out, through their cell phones. Sprint is the first U.S. wireless carrier to offer a consumer-focused LBS application that enables a parent to use a phone or computer to pinpoint the location of a child.

When I was a kid, there also was a tracking system. Other parents and neighbors kept a watchful eye on us. Happy

(It also helps you find lost cell phones.)

Mom had that tracking system. Also, if I called from a payphone or a friend's house, they would occasionally call back to see if I was there (this before Caller ID).

Phone Ping
May 1, 2006 1:47PM PDT

Sprint may be the first US carrier to offer the service but this is not new. At A&M we had this service through a British company, I'll find the name and link in time, and was very useful in hunting down fugitives with cell phones (or mobiles as the service called them). The service uses three actual methods. It first attempts to get a lock on the GPS device if the phone is equipped with one, and the GPS has not been disabled by the user (some phones have the option to turn that device off). Failing that, it will try to triangulate a signal using the cellular transmission towers. Failing that, it will try to triangulate via radio satelite. Usually, a location was fixed off the second ping, using the cellular towers. Very accurate, and very useful. At the same time, the Devil's advocate in me wonders at the potential for abuse of the system. In my personal opinion, using the system to find wanted criminals, kidnapped persons, and runaways is a very good thing. Keeping tabs on the youngster may be a good thing, and yet my gut instinct makes me feel uneasy. I can't really put it into more definable form, so I'll have to wait and see.

How is phone ping ...

... any different than calling your phone? That's what I always do. Doesn't work when the battery is dead or the ringer is on silent though Wink

Phone ping is done on the computer

you go to the service site, type in your ID and passcode, type in the cellphone number you wish to locate, and hit the button marked ping. A signal is sent to the phone, but the signal doesn't ring throgh as a regular call would. When the triangulation program fixes the location a map display comes up, giving the address and a diagram of the building with a dot showing the location of the phone, or if it is not in a building it shows the street or other type of location with a dot at the appropriate space, i.e. Tannersville cemetary, and outline of the grounds, and a red dot in the northwest corner, approximately 3 feet from the northern boundary, and approximately 46 feet from the western boundary. The service claims to be accurate within 5 feet of the phone's actual location, though, as fugitives tend to move around a lot, we never found one precisely within 5 feet of the ping location. Still faily accurate otherwise.

Neat ...

... probably wouldn't help me much Wink I'm always "losing" my phone in my house or car. Often when the battery is running down so it has lost power. If the phone is off does this work to at least tell I'm not wasting my time looking for it in the house?

It depends on the internal configuration and service

package. Some cell phones will still receive in off mode, and will store any voicemail internally. Some won't. For those that won't, generally this will not work unless the cell phone is on. Also, if the battery is dead or has been removed, this method will fail as well. As it happens, my cellphone does store voicemail and text messages on the cellphone itself, and can be tracked when it's turned off.

Getting better though. Threatening to curtail her use of my car works wonders.
