Question

TPLINK TL-WR841N Wifi Router keeps dropping connections

Jul 21, 2017 11:41PM PDT

I have a TPLINK TL-WR841N wireless router. It used to drop connections and I would power cycle and then it would start working again. But now it has started dropping connections literally every minute. I recently added two echo dots and a nest to the network. When I look at the router page I see there are 7 devices connected which is expected. I connected directly to the modem and got good connectivity. Are 7 connections too much for the router to handle?

Answer
Routers can age and do this but try this.

Find the home support page at TP Link for that model and see if they issued newer firmware. This usually helps. After that I try another router.

Answer
TP-Link TL-WR841N Router Keeps Dropping Connection
Jul 25, 2017 3:16PM PDT

salilsurendran,

It looks like your TP-Link TL-WR841 router is unable to maintain connectivity to the Internet since it keeps disconnecting from it. The full name of the router is, TP-Link TL-WR841N. The 2 Echo Dots and the Nest you recently added to the network of yours are very heavy on bandwidth. Especially, for wireless ports on a router with a limit of 15 wireless connections not made to handle heavy media bandwidth, it can impact connectivity.
It would be a good idea to remove the 2 Echo Dots and the Nest to see if connectivity to the Internet is more stable. This would tell you if the disconnects are related to the removed devices and the bandwidth they are using. If the Internet connectivity is stable after these devices are removed from the network, an upgrade may be required for the 2 Echo Dots and the Nest to be connected without cutting the connection to the Internet. The modem or possibly your Internet speed depending on line information your ISP has. It is best to call your ISP regarding this.
