Question

TP-LINK Archer c7

Mar 12, 2016 5:06PM PST

i have just purchased an Archer C7 and tried to set it up. it will not connect to the internet. it sends out 2.4 and 5 GHz signals but neither lets me receive internet access. I went through the setup guide and since i cannot connect to the internet, i cant complete the setup because it cannot find my type of IP address. I have now given up all hope of ever fixing this myself. PLZ... HELP ME.

Answer
My C7 had an annoying issue.

But it seems better with their latest firmware. But I changed to the C9 and the same issue followed.

OK, details are slim to none in your post. If you are using your (unknown) modem to your PC you must power down that modem then power it up after you plug in the new router.

Otherwise the modem locks onto your MAC address.

So that's 2 things.
1. Power up order matters.
2. Firmware must be current for your rev c7.

More Details
Mar 13, 2016 12:18AM PST

Sorry for the lack of detail, i am using an old ISP provided Arris: Model: TM5O2G as a modem. I do have a feeling that it is too old. My internet works fine with my ISP provided Arris: Model DG1670A router but the router is far too weak for the size of my house and it constantly cuts out. I tried to install the AC1750 Archer this morning by following the manual but it did not connect to the internet. It showed the LED indicating it was connected but when i tried to connect via android phone, internet was not available. I then tried the setup on the website provided and it showed a notice; the WAN port was disconnected. After a switch between Ethernet cables, the WAN port disconnected notice was gone and i proceeded with the setup. First thing in the setup was asking what type of IP i had and i chose auto detect. It said it could not connect to the internet and therefore could not detect which type i had. At this point i was rushing to get out the door and posted the above. I would also appreciate it if you or anyone would guide me on how to update the firmware.

My old c7 rev one reached across the street so power?
Mar 13, 2016 8:08AM PDT

Now we know that phones and TVs are not great clients but range here from the old C7 rev 1 to a Chromebook (laptop) extended across the street and even worked in the neighbor's garage when I used my Nexus 7 tablet.

The firmware update instructions are at the TP Link site. Because those look right I don't duplicate the instructions here.

What if the MAC address locked? Will it remain locked?
Mar 13, 2016 1:05PM PDT

If the MAC address remains locked, how can i unlock it?

For over a decde this works.
Mar 14, 2016 11:23AM PDT

I've never had to call it in to unlock. This is my procedure.

1. Power down the cable modem.
2. Move the ethernet to the router or new router.
3. Power up the cable modem.
4. Power up the router.

Huge misunderstanding
Mar 15, 2016 8:01PM PDT

well i realized that the router i had previously installed was a modem/router so i had to disable tho router part and use it as a modem only. i got it to work but you did help me update the firmware which also had to be done. thank you for all of the help.

I understand it's rough to communicate over forums but at least we got something done!
