Question

Touch typing

Aug 17, 2018 12:41PM PDT

I have been newly adopting the "touch type" method in lieu of the slow way of looking at the PC keyboard and pressing keys. ( I am making reasonable progress in developing muscle memory for my fingers for touch typing.)

I shall much appreciate knowing from those who routinely use touch typing (which must be most people):

When touch typing, do your fingers always --or almost always-- momentarily return to the base row after typing letters in the the top two or the bottom row, or can, through muscle memory, your fingers jump from any key to any key in any row while the unused fingers are resting on some keys? I did not find definitive answer anywhere through a Google search. So I thought of posting the query here!

Thanks!

Answer
I bet you will have to watch touch typists to learn more.

testing this in this reply I find I don't always return to the home keys.

But this is with decades of touch typing behind me. I think the classic training is to move your fingers back to home but as you become more proficient, you may find your fingers skipping the return to home step.
