Touble installing XP

Nov 17, 2003 9:09AM PST

I try to install XP and everything goes fine up until it finishes analyzing my system, then it says that I have blocking issues I need to fix? I don't even know how to fix them.
Here's what it says:
Unsupported Hardware Configuration
----------------------------------
Your computer has hardware devices that prohibit you from upgrading
to Windows XP.

Highpoint HPT366 Ultra DMA Controller

Specs:
Windows 98 SE
Pentium III @ 852MHz
514MB RAM

-> Highpoint HPT366 Ultra DMA Controller

That's the item that gives some XP install fits. Updates of BIOS (slight danger) and sometimes moving the drive to a normal IDE controller is a workaround. Best bet is to ask the board supplier for step-by-step XP install instructions.

I believe that some hardware in your older computer is not compatable with the needs of xp. There is a small download from Microsoft that can tell you for sure at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp If you find it is not a necessary hardware that is incompatable, for eg: a scanner, you could unplug it while installing, and would need a newer scanner that is xp compatable. Good luck, Joe

Download size: The Upgrade Advisor download is large (approximately 50 megabytes), and is recommended only for download over a high-speed Internet connection, such as DSL or cable modem.
