for the cable box set it to 720p or 1080i since your tv can not do 1080p there is no need to change it for a box that can do 1080p.
1080p would only be good on that sided tv if you sat 3 feet or less, so no big deal that it is 720p. 1080p is best on a tv 50" or larger
for the new dvd player, you just have to goto the menu settings (dvd player) & change the resolution to 720p.
I just had to replace my old (very satisfactory) clunky old TV with a 720p Panasonic TC-26LX85 LCD. I have a cable box from Time Warner, and when the guy installed it (they gave no directions, and I got the connections wrong the first time), he set something to 1080i. I don't know whether that means that the TV is 1080i or the cable box. I don't know whether, if it's the cable box, I can get a different one that does 1080p. I'm really at sea about all this new stuff. When I last got a TV, a TV was a TV. . . .
Ignorant as I am, I thought that my new TV could deal with 1080p, but I can't find anything in the manual that tells me what I have to know. (I was told at the store that it made no difference whether I had 720p or 1080p where HD TV was concerned, and 1080i never came into the conversation.)
In addition, I may have to replace my old VCR as well, and I have seen a combo VCR/DVD recorder, Sony RDR-VX560 that says it "upconverts to HDMI 1080p." Does that mean that if the cable box and TV are doing 1080i, the Sony VCR/DVD machine will be incompatible? My apologies, but I need a really, really clear explanation of all this, something starting from the beginning and in simple terms. Computers I know pretty well, but this is all meaningless to me.
If anyone can/is willing to help me, I shall be very appreciative.
Thanks,
Jenny
