Total Noobie question, can you please answer?

Mar 10, 2005 4:29PM PST

I was going to get a router to share connection between 2 computers in my house a couple weeks ago, however, that plan was scrapped when the other computer would of needed an ethernet card installed and it just got to become more hassle then it was worth.

Now, my mom got a new Dell Latitude Notebook from work to bring home at night to access her companies server. Her boss told her they would like her to get broadband internet and do things at home, I am the only one with DSL in the house and have no problem getting a router so she can use her notebook.

My questions are this. I want to know if she would have to change IP addresses constantly to access my dsl at home and whatever her work runs off of? I don't think her work would care for her changing IP addresses constantly, it may mess things up on their end? (I know this may be a stupid question and someone a lot more experienced with this stuff is laughing, but I just want some things answered.)

2nd, I like to browse a site called SportsbyBrooks and Maxim once in a while and they both have what may be deemed inappropriate by some (girls in bikinis, no nudity) if she were at home and connected to my dsl line on from her wireless card in her office would the sites I visit appear in her browser or computers cache or history?

Since it is her business computer I don't think they would appreciate those sites. Could you please answer?

Thanks, sorry for making it kind of long.

The easiest thing to do is ask the office IT

because its depends on what configuration the office have.

asking my mom to ask a question to the IT, is pulling teeth

She will always botch the question and ask him the wrong thing, or not explain to me his response. If I asked her to ask about IP addresses she would be confused.

Could you explain to me how it work when a laptop just connects to a signal from a router to use the internet? I know when people at my school and stuff do it, it seems simple and they don't have to configure too much...One guy showed me one time, and it seemed like he clicked something in his taskbar and just chose which signal he wanted to connect to.

what signal? are using wireless or wired network?

Check your DSL modem, is it a modem/router combo or just a modem.

The easiest thing is to see on back of your modem, does it have more than 1 port?

If it does then you don't need to buy other router.

Connect your PC and your mom laptop to it (using RJ45 /network cable)

If you going to go wireless, then you need an access point.

As for the IT guy... why don't you talk to them...
with any information from the IT, no one will be able to solve your problem. Because the company might use a VPN, Firewall, Intranet, etc.

BUT it also could be as simple as choosing a proxy in internet explorer...

Good Luck

The IT guy gave her a paper that instructs you how to access

their server. I think it is a VPN if I remember correctly.

Her IT also told her to get the Linksys WRT54G 54Mbps Wireless-G Cable/DSL Broadband Router. This is also an access point.

Could you answer my other question too regarding her history and cache showing sites I visit on my computer.

Thanks for the help so far Gakada, it's appreciated.

how do you connect to your DSL? using modem only or modem/router?

you probably already a Router... check it out.. if so you only need an access point.
