Toslink to mini problem (TV on computer speakers)

Sep 12, 2011 9:25AM PDT

Hello. I am hoping an expert (or at least more so than me) out there can help me.

I recently bought a Panasonic Viera ST30 and Cyber Acoustics powered speakers (CA-3602) to go with them. I discovered that the TV only has a "Digital Audio Out" and HDMI out, but no 3.5mm jack. So, I figured that if I could adapt the Digital Audio to Optical with an Toslink-to-Optical Mini Plug Digital Cable, I could use my speakers. It doesn't work.

Am I misunderstanding something? I want to get my tv audio onto external, powered speakers (I don't want to buy a full stereo system at this time). What can I do? Was this not the correct approach? I would greatly appreciate help and advice.

Thanks!

-Michael

Eureka!

Thank you both for your responses. This seems like it is exactly what I need.

So, if I buy this: http://www.amazon.com/FiiO-Digital-Analog-Audio-Converter/dp/B0053VKP8S/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

...and this: http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Digital-Optical-Audio-Toslink/dp/B001TH7GSW/ref=pd_sim_e_3

...and this: http://www.amazon.com/RiteAV-3-5mm-Stereo-Female-Cable/dp/B0018MI5F6/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1315936422&sr=1-1

...then I should be able to use my speakers, right?

Can I use the cable I already have (http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Go-27016-Velocity-Toslink-/dp/B0002JFN1A/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1315936522&sr=1-4) to connect from the TV to the converter box, or is that yellow jack in the picture not a 3.5mm? If yes, will that be of any less quality than a toslink to toslink cable (as linked above)?

Thank you again!

Make certain PCM output is supported by the HDTV

I noticed in the first Amazon review that someone indicated PCM is a must and not solely DD5.1 for this to work.
YMMV, as usual.

Most of the newer plasmas aren't designed for this

I believe some of the older Pannys had better luck in this respect. Also, isn't the input on the Cyber Acoustics analog?

You might try over at AVS forum to see if anyone has a workaround.

I don't know if it's worth the effort or not but...

you could use a converter/adapter like this. You will also need addition cable (RCA to mini jack) to make this work. Good luck.
