Question

Toshiba Satellite will not boot and reinstall windows

by comprep13 / September 24, 2013 11:51 AM PDT

I have Toshiba Laptop A205-4587. It worked fine for since I bought in 2009. Few weeks back all of a sudden the laptop would not boot. So I tried a couple of times to restart and it would bring me to the screen where it would ask for start up repair. Did that for a few times and then it stopped to boot. It would start, can hear the fan and nothing on the screen. I have tried doing a generic start up. Did not work. I have removed the battery completely and have it work on AC did not work. i thaught it would be the hard drive so bought a new hard drive and installed it. Trying to reinstall the software and it does not boot at all. It shows sometimes loading Windows file and then hangs up. I tried going into BIOS (which worked after a couple of restarts) and checked to see if the processor was enabled and all looks good. Please any help and suggestion welcome. Unfortunatley not in a position to spend few hundred dollars on a new unit.

Answer
Did you try the usual cleaning and new heatsink compound?

While I can't guess why it returned from the grave once, at this many years old I find I have to do a deep clean and new compounds.

Usual cleaning

Yes i have opened the laptop and cleaned it. I have not tried a new heatsink compound though. I replaced the HDD to a new one thinking the hard drive might have been done with. I try to reinstall using the CD'S that came with the computer the computer freezes sometime half way and some time as soon as I insert the CD and start loading WINDOWS files..

Which is a typical sign of cracked/old compound.

It's pretty cheap stuff compared to a new laptop. I never give this a second thought when the next stop is the recycle bin.
