Question

Toshiba satellite laptop charging broken

by NurseNotTech / January 27, 2017 7:21 PM PST

Starting about a month ago I noticed my computer's brightness would change on its own and I could not control it's random flickering from light to darker. I thought it was possibly the power cord coming disconnected but the charging icon on my screen remained lit and present. Now in the last 2 days the flickering has become more frequent and the charging symbol on screen flickers with the brightness change. I bought a new power cord and the same problem persisted. Looking inside the power jack nothing looks discolored or smells burnt. I have Macfee and have done 2 full scans finding no threats. I have also done a full Malwarebytes scan, again with no threats found.
I am not great with computer terminology but would really like to try fixing this issue on my own before taking my computer in. I would be very appreciative if someone could give me some advice! thank you in advance

Answer
To me this sounds like hardware.

And you have been scanning for software problems.

If this machine is a few years old, it may be time to check repair costs or replacements.

Today I opened up my laptop and now it will not turn on at all. The only light is a constant orange LED on the bottom front of the computer. It is next to a charging cord and battery icon. The light stays on even if I unplug the charging cord. I tried holding the power on button for 30 seconds while plugged in and not plugged in and nothing happened. To answer your other question, I have had this computer for just over 4 years.

Certainly confirms it's a hardware issue.

I don't know your usage pattern but daily unplug/plug use takes a toll. Get estimates, compare with replacement costs.

And if you forgot to backup your files, look at those 20 buck USB drive cases.
