Let Toshiba work it out or if you must buy, get the warranty in no uncertain terms and be ready to ship it in.

Most of the reviews/complaints were from the end of 04 and early 05, any reason to think there already has been a fix? I certainly don't want to ever have to send it in!
You are not assured your unit in the box is without this issue. It's why I write "avoid" this make through 2005 so you (or anyone else) doesn't take the chance.
This is my opinion on this matter, but you should have yours.
The fix is not good enough, here's why. ESD (damage) is not repaired by replacing the speaker grill. The damage to the chips has been done and can result in a shorter laptop life span. Toshiba's engineering in regards to ESD is disturbing.

Getting a laptop is not a priority right now so I guess I will NOT get the Toshiba. There will most likely be some good sales around Christmas, so I will wait. Thanks for the info
The issue is less likely to afflict a new Toshiba owner. Toshiba corrected many of these but it takes time for what's in the pipe to get cleared out and to find what other models were affected by the engineering groups lapse in judgement.
Keep shopping since each month brings great deals.

Exercise caution when considering purchasing a A85-S1072. I purchased a system from best buy in early August. By the end of the month it was not working correctly. After an initial mis-diagnosis of what was wrong, the local service center determined the motherboard had broken. Well that was over a month ago and I am still waiting for a replacement part. Toshiba "Customer Support" has been less than helpful and insist all I can do is wait. So my advice is, if you don't mind having a system that spend more time in the shop than in your possesion, go for it. Other than that, steer clear of this particular notebook.
