Toshiba M45-331 review?

Feb 13, 2005 2:36PM PST

Any Toshiba M45 users out there who can comment on the heat/fan-hoise issue? Given the lack of qualified reviews out there for this new model, I'm curious to see if the M45 faces the same concerns that impacted the legacy M30 series. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Toshiba M45-331 review
Feb 17, 2005 11:05PM PST

Silent & luke warm!! This new design is the next big step in Notebooks. I have seen Notebooks that will heat a small room and cause you to raise your voice. This new Intel Pentium M 730 (1.60GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 533MHz FSB) Processor is fast and cool, it does not need a big fan to keep it cool so noise is not an issue. Intel also includes a new amazing graphics media accelerator with the processor as a package. Intel really did their home work with this package and Toshiba includes a sound package to quiet things down even more, a Wide-screen XGA Tru-Brite Display, very adjustable touchpad, and 8X DVD SuperMulti drive to make this machine what a notebook should be. Fast, quiet, and cool. I bought mine the day they hit the market (about four weeks ago) and have nothing but praise for this excellent machine. Thank you Toshiba and Intel.

Static problems and freezing up????
Feb 20, 2005 2:13AM PST

Hi,
I also am really considering buying the Toshiba m45-s331 from Best Buy. I was really set on buying it until I read about the A75 and M30 series of the Toshiba Satellites that are having these weird static problems that cause the computer to freeze up over and over. Does anyone know if this is also common for the M45-s331 model?? If you do decide not to go with the Toshiba, I have seen great reviews for the HP Pavilion dv1170us and Compaq Presario 2140us. They are both at Best Buy also.

Toshiba M45

I have seen no negative reviews on the M45 Most reviews give it 5 out of 5, the performance features and price make it a best buy, by what I have seen. Mine performs perfectly. I was waiting for the new processors to come out before I made my decision and have no regrets. Speed, temperature, noise, display, wi-fi, dvd burner all excellent.

Sounds Good
Feb 20, 2005 3:20AM PST

ajflyer,
That sounds good to me. It's nice finally hearing from someone who actually already owns an M45-s331.

Would you mind telling me this though:
1) How long is the battery life?
2) How long have you had yours?

Thanx!!
~Mike

I too just bought one and am enjoying it. being new to wireless tho I have a ? for you. On the front left are 5 led's, the fifth one named "wireless indicator light." It is my understanding that this light should flash or be on while working wirelessly. Mine however never comes on.

Could you advise, as I have 8 days to swap it out. TIA

Static problem
Mar 4, 2005 1:25AM PST

I just returned my second Toshiba M45 S331 laptop because they both freeze up when I switch from battery to AC supply. I don't know what causes it but it might have the same static problem as the M30 series. I am waiting for a new one to come in but I am comtemplating in buying another model not Toshiba.

dv1170us static and freezing issue
Mar 9, 2005 12:05AM PST

I bought the dv1170us from Best Buy. It has gone back 2 times in the past 3 weeks for static issues freezing the computer. Other than static, freezing, and not being able to use the computer, it is great.

love it
Feb 20, 2005 4:38AM PST

I bought my m45 in Jan 16, and I'm extremely happy with it. I've been using it heavily, running up to five programs at the same time and everything runs smoothly. Most of the programs I use are basic stuff (word processing and the such) but I also use SPSS, a statistics program, using extremely large large data sets (more than 100,000 data rows and columns), and that runs smoothly as well, which it didn't in my previous amd athlon laptop. The battery life is about 2:30 hrs without using any kind of power saving setup and using the internet and.

The super multidrive works really fast, at least for me. I've been ripping music cds and burning data cds, and i love quiet it is. Haven't used the dvd ripping/burning features yet. Also, it doesn't get hot at all! And the trubrite display is awesome! And I love that I don't have to boot windows to watch dvds.

In short, I love it!

Where to buy?
Feb 20, 2005 6:00AM PST

Thanks for the comments Serena,

At this point I am really liking the m45-s331. Any suggestions on pricing or where to buy? Circuit City has it for $1249. But they also have a restocking fee, even if it is returned for a malfunction/defect. Any suggestions???

Thanks,
Mike

Restocking fee
Mar 4, 2005 12:54AM PST

Mike,

Restocking fee is not applicable to defective goods. Under the MA law, return policy does not apply in the case of defective goods. Not sure where you are located but check your state law. You can argue your case if your newly purchased laptop is defective because you are protected under the consumer protection law.
