Question

Toshiba Laptop video card

My satellite pro L550 screen has started to flicker. The top title bar of any application is up top of screen but the main part of the window has moved up over the top of it. The bottom task bar looks like there's 10 on top of each other.

Is this a graphics card issue? The original card is Radeon HD 5145. I cant find one on ebay but there are plenty of different numbers. That look the same card. I dont need any graphics power. I dont play games. Will any of these replacement cards work for me and fix my problem?

Answer
No L550 has a card.

This is a common misconception about laptops. The video section is not on a card but on the mainboard with everything else so no card to be replaced.

If this was mine I'd boot some other LIVE OS from CD, DVD or USB (how is on the web) to see if the problem is hardware.

I did as suggested and booted up with Fedora. The same screen issues existed. So I guess thats it then. Time for a new machine? I have had my moneys worth. I have gone through 2 batteries, 1 charger, 2 keyboards, 1 router. Perhaps its time to start fresh.

Sounds hardware to me.

But and this is a long shot, if the screen is OK when very cold I'd get in there to not only clean but pull off the heatsinks to replace compound. This is slightly dangerous so be sure you accept this may be the last time the machine works.

I have recently cleaned it out... a couple of months ago. It kept overheating/shutting down. The CPU cooler was blocked up full of lint/dust. Doesnt seem to be the issue this time.
